Creative Felting: DIY Ornaments and Cards

Hey Crafty Friends! Today, I am absolutely thrilled to dive into the world of crafting with something different—felt! This is my very first time working with it, and let me tell you, these dies are simply adorable! I just couldn’t resist giving them a whirl. I’ve created two stunning ornaments and a delightful baby card!

These fabulous new dies, designed by the incredibly talented Nicole Spohr, are nothing short of charming. I’ll be focusing on just three of the amazing dies from the collection today. Forest Fox

This fox was my very first foray into the art of felting, and what a journey it has been! I handpicked two beautiful shades of brown and orange felt for this charming creature. The lighter orange serves as the perfect canvas for the fox’s main body, while a touch of the darker felt accents the feet, giving them just the right amount of contrast. The face, the insides of the ears, and the fluffy fur on the tail and neck are crafted from a soft cream felt. For the facial features, I opted for pink and black, adding to its expression. Every piece of the body was cut in pairs for extra stability, ensuring this fox would stand proud.

To bring my vision to life, I chose a stitch that runs around the edges. Using a variegated coordinating thread on the main body, the colors seamlessly change with each stitch. I took the time to stitch each piece individually before gluing everything together, which truly brought this ornament to life. The wool proved to be thick once stitched, leading me to the decision to use glue instead of sewing it all together. The result? An adorable, heartfelt ornament that captures the spirit of creativity!

Reindeer

I chose two distinct shades of brown—one light and one dark—for this reindeer’s body and antlers! The cream-colored felt added an contrasting touch for the face and belly, complemented by a piece of red for that iconic Rudolph spirit. I cut out the body, head, and arms twice, ensuring stability that would as I stitched each piece.

This marked my second attempt, and I chose to use a simple back stitch to sew everything together before bringing it all to life. The cream muzzle was stitched to the front of the felt before I joined the back of the head to the front. I repeated this process with the cream belly.

As I crafted this ornament, stitching the arms to the body felt like an achievement in itself. Although the wool was thick, I embraced the challenge and attached them, watching my vision come to life!

Snowy Owl

My third attempt is an adorable snowy owl! I cut out white and gray felt for the main body, and I chose orange and black for the accents. The flower pops with deep pink, cream, and green felts, adding a playful touch.

I once again cut two of all the white sections. I began by stitching the gray face onto the top white felt, adding the intricate gray details on the forehead. Next, I stitched the gray chest to the white and embellished the wings. After that, I attached all the white pieces to their counterparts, creating a cohesive look.

Instead of stitching everything, I opted to glue the sections together, as they were quite thick. I cut the colored cardstock to A2 size (4.25″ x 5.5″) and attached the owl using liquid adhesive. The finishing touch was creating the sentiment with my glimmer foil machine, before being adhered to the cardstock. Finally, I affixed everything to the front of a white cardbase, bringing this project to life!
